New Applicants
Pharmacy technicians new to the field should use the following instructions and documents to apply for registration with the Board. The application fee is $77. Use the following forms and instructions to complete the process:
- LA-14 Tech and Supplements (Form LA-14)
- KBI / FBI Background Check (Form S-100)
- Order a Fingerprint Card
Please allow 3 weeks for the Board to process a complete technician application. Missing items, incomplete applications, criminal history and other items cause significant delays.
Personal History Reporting
If you answer "yes" to any of the Personal History questions on the Technician Application, you must complete the Personal History Reporting Form in addition to your application.
Certification Exam
Technicians will be required to pass a technician certification exam before the first renewal or, if previously registered, at the time of application. All pharmacy technicians registered on or after July 1, 2017, will be required to pass a national pharmacy technician certification examination (KAR 68-5-17).
The Board has approved the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) and the National HealthCareer Association Examination for the Certification of Pharmacy Technicians (ExCPT). Please contact either organization for more information regarding the pharmacy technician certification examination.
If a pharmacy technician has already passed an approved exam, please email pharmacy@ks.gov, fax or mail a copy of the certificate to the Board office along with the pharmacy technician name and Kansas registration number.
Exam Resources
Any technician who is unable to take or pass an approved exam may request a six-month extension at least 30 days before the technician's registration expiration date by completing an LA-75 Technician Certification Extension Request (Form LA-75). The form is not a waiver for continuing education hours.
Continuing Education
Pharmacy technicians are required to complete 20 hours of continuing education for each registration renewal period. Those hours must have been earned during the registration period.
Continuing Education Audit
The Board conducts an audit each year of a random sample of renewed technician's continuing education submissions to ensure they meet the Board's requirements. Any audited technician who did not meet the requirements will be notified and asked to provide proof of completed continuing education to meet the requirements.
A failure to respond to audit requests could result in disciplinary action.
